Ryan, John J.KENTUCKY STATE NEWS. FATAL FIGHT In Lexington Between Saloonkeepers Over a disputed Account. LEXINGTON, Ky., Nov. 17.-Merritt Martin, a saloonkeeper and agent for the Chattanooga Brewing Co., and J. J. Ryan, also a saloonkeeper, had a terrible fight Tuesday night in the latter’s place of business on Main street, as a result of which Ryan is dead and Martin is locked up charged with murder.  The men had been good friends until recently, they had a dispute over an account owed the Chattanooga Brewing Co., by Ryan.  Martin declared they must have had a settlement Tuesday night and had entered Ryan’s place and requested the same.  After some conversation the men began fighting with their fists.  Bystanders interfered and separated them.  While Martin was being held away from Ryan, the latter, reaching over the heads of the peacemakers holding Martin, hit him a blow in the face, whereupon the latter drew his pistol and began shooting.  The friends became panic stricken and fell fled from the room, leaving the fighters together.  Martin’s third shot struck Ryan in the left arm and a fourth entered the abdomen.  Martin fled from the place and was arrested.  Ryan died while being carried to the hospital.  Ryan was a single man, aged about thirty- five.
